Wedding Cakes: FAQ
I’m looking for a fully customized, grand cake for my wedding. How does the process work?
We LOVE making custom showstoppers. At Honey Crumb, we call them Fine Art cakes, because they really are uniquely breathtaking works of edible art. Our recommended lead time for a Fine Art cake is 3-9 months. The process begins when you fill out our inquiry form, at which point we check availability for your event. Once you’ve enjoyed sampling our cakes in the comfort of your own home, we start up a conversation via email or phone to review the design details for the cake and the logistics of setup for your wedding day. We’ll prepare a proposal, and if you choose to proceed with us, you would then submit 50% of the total as a non-refundable date reservation fee. The balance payment is due two weeks before your wedding, and if necessary, we’d make any adjustments to the design and size of the cake before then. Final RSVPs are due three weeks before your wedding.
We’re eloping / hosting a very small reception. What should we do?
We know how to make simple & compact cakes with big visual impact and memorable flavor. Our Micro-Wedding Cakes were specifically designed to meet this need. Our online store is the place to find them! There are lots of lovely options for you there, and we can (typically) have a cake ready for pickup with just 2 weeks of lead time, depending on our seasonal availability — though it’s always best to order at least 1-3 months ahead!
My wedding will be very simple and classic. And I’m on a tight budget. What do you recommend?
We have a beautiful selection of Classic & Simple cakes that’ll help you stay on budget and simplify the planning process. Our recommended lead time for a cake like this is 1-3 months, but we can work with less lead time than that during the off-peak season.
For an even more budget-friendly option, you might consider purchasing a selection of Deli Cakes from our online store, and displaying them as a group on various pedestals on your cake table. Cake groupings like this can be so elegant and memorable (not to mention delicious)!
Can I have fresh flowers on my cake?
We DON’T use, or recommend the use of, fresh flowers on our cakes (or any cake, for that matter!). Commercially-grown flowers are typically sprayed with pesticides during their growth, and other chemicals during harvest and shipping. These contaminants are NOT food safe and have no place anywhere near a beautiful dessert that your guests will eat. Furthermore, some flower species are inherently toxic / poisonous, even if they’re organically grown! This includes common wedding flowers like hydrangeas, ranunculus, and anemones — among many others.
Instead, we use our own handmade sugar flowers, which are crafted in our studio one petal at a time. Each year, we spend countless hours researching botany and developing our flower-making skills — and we love to share our knowledge via online tutorials and in-person workshops.
Our goal is not to compete with nature, but to celebrate its beauty and produce breathtaking adornments for our cakes.
In choosing sugar flowers for your cake, you are supporting us as artisans in our quest to keep this remarkable art form alive and thriving. You’ll also end up with keepsakes from your event, as sugar flowers last forever if stored in a display vessel (e.g. an acrylic box or under a glass dome), away from direct sunlight and moisture.
I’d like to offer edible favors to my wedding guests. Can you help?
Yes! We offer a selection of French macarons and decorated shortbread cookies, both of which are popular choices for wedding favors. They’re sold in minimums of 2 dozen. We can package them individually for elegant gifting. Browse the gorgeous selection in our Online Store!
French macarons are naturally gluten-free and can be tinted to match your color palette. Or, if you’re a shortbread fan, we can personalize these lovely cookies with a wildflower or fern design to match your organic wedding style, or pretty marbling, or even edible rose petals… so many possibilities!
How should I display my cake?
Strictly speaking, you don’t need a stand, as all our cakes come on a coordinating display board (sometimes known as a “cake drum” in the industry). They can be placed as-is onto the cake table for an elegant look. Having said that, cakes always love a little added height, to make them extra-special. You can place a pedestal of your choice directly underneath the board (but please don’t try to remove the cake from its display board, as this will damage its exterior finish).
How do cake tastings work?
Sample our offerings at your leisure with a Cake Tasting, available for pre-order on our website for PICKUP from our studio in lower Queen Anne (Seattle). Our take-home tasting format is extremely popular among our clients and has replaced all in-person consultations.
Our tasting sets are designed to serve 2-4 people. We’d recommend ordering more than one set if you’re planning to do a group tasting with family, bridesmaids, etc.
We offer custom vegan, eggless, dairy-free, OR gluten-free samples upon request, for those with special dietary requirements. For reasons of quality, we do not offer cakes that are both vegan AND gluten-free at this time.
Pre-order your very own “to go” Cake Tasting here.
I don’t like very sweet cakes or frostings. Can you help?
All of the buttercream fillings (and exterior coatings) that we use for our cakes, with the exception of our vegan cakes, use Swiss meringue buttercream. This is far less sweet than a classic American buttercream, as it contains HALF as much sugar by volume. First we prepare a silky meringue of egg whites and cane sugar, and then we carefully whip REAL butter into it to create a luscious emulsion (whereas a classic American frosting involves adding boatloads of powdered sugar to whipped vegetable shortening). Then we proceed with adding other flavors — e.g. pure vanilla extract and a pinch of salt for our final coats, or many other variations for our fillings (e.g. raspberry compote, lemon juice, espresso, melted chocolate, etc). NOTE: Swiss meringue buttercream is very “butter-forward” in flavor, so if you grew up with American frosting, its butteriness may surprise (and hopefully delight) you!
Each of our cakes has a personality of its own. Our vanilla, lemon, and almond-based cakes are based on a buttermilk sponge recipe and have a tight but extremely tender crumb. We'd best describe their texture as sitting somewhere between a moist pound cake and a classic butter cake, rather than a super-fluffy (and drier) chiffon cake. Our chocolate and carrot cakes are a bit more “squidgy” or fudgy. We carefully control the sugar in each of these recipes (since we bake from scratch and not from a box mix) to ensure that FLAVOR is first and sweetness is de-emphasized.
